Language: en Canonical URL: https://www.missionlandscape.com/post/break-down-2-wire-irrigation ## Headings Structure: H1: Break Down 2-Wire Irrigation H3: What Is A 2-Wire Irrigation System? H3: What Are The Benefits? H3: What Are The Drawbacks? H3: How Mission Landscape Uses 2-Wire Systems ## Main Content: Apply NowInsightBreak Down 2-Wire IrrigationWhen it comes to deciding on what type of irrigation system your business should install, the two most common types are 2-wire and conventional systems. While most properties have been constructed with conventional irrigation systems, 2-wire irrigation has recently gained more traction in the market space. At Mission Landscape, we are committed to implementing the best systems for our clients. As the industry continues to innovate, our team provides knowledge and experience to find the best solution for each business. Our comprehensive water management services help companies not only keep their landscaping fresh and beautiful, but it also improves water use and decreases our clients’ costs.‍Understand what 2-wire irrigation systems entail and how your business could benefit from them: What Is A 2-Wire Irrigation System?2-wire irrigation systems are exactly what they sound like. These systems use two separate wires that travel from a central controller to a valve. From this point, the range can be extended by creating a daisy chain with various amounts of valves. This allows the length to be nearly unlimited. Instead of all the wiring being centralized to the controller, the two wires are run from the controller and connect at a decoder at each valve. The decoder is the “brain” for each valve. This allows the controller to tell each decoder to turn the valve on and off when scheduled. What Are The Benefits? There are a couple of reasons why 2-wire irrigation systems have grown in interest for businesses. One of those reasons being that it can be more cost-effective. Because all valves do not need to be connected to the central controller, these systems allow less wire to be used. This eliminates running wires to each and every valve and makes installation much easier. Being able to run the whole system on one central unit creates less of a headache than the everyday “do it yourself” type to install. On larger-scale projects, 2-wire irrigation systems can be better to expand your watering process. Splicing the wires into two allows you to create a new zone at any given moment. What Are The Drawbacks?Initially, 2-wire systems might seem like the best option, especially if your business is located on a small property. While 2-wire offers benefits to start-up, issues arise in troubleshooting. When this system runs into problems, it can be a slippery slope. For example, if there is a connection issue in your chain of valves, anything downstream of that bad connection is immediately shut down. In larger projects, this situation may be catastrophic to the health and beauty of a property. Any damage to a wire in your system can leave you stranded. Finding the source of the break can also be an extensive task. Since these wires are meant to be subterranean, one would have to dig up and find exactly where the short is located. With no map or guide of how the wire was set, this seemingly easy task could set your irrigator back on completing this task. How Mission Landscape Uses 2-Wire SystemsLuckily, if your property already has a 2-wire system set up or you are thinking of installing it, not all is lost. There are ways in which troubleshooting issues can be solved. Our team at Mission Landscape has invested in technology to help navigate and find system issues. Through training, our irrigation techs can diagnose the connection problem by seeing a pulse-like reading on a device. This reading will give the irrigation tech an accurate reading on where the issue will be, allowing the system to be up and running as fast as possible. If your business is experiencing problems within your 2-wire irrigation system, we can help. Our team is dedicated to helping you fix problems before they become detrimental. Our service response time to call for after-hour emergencies is 18 minutes. Have questions on your property’s current water management system? Reach out to us here to learn more about how Mission Landscape’s Irrigation specialists can help improve your system. Language: en Canonical URL: https://www.missionlandscape.com/post/how-to-dispose-of-the-shot-hole-borer ## Headings Structure: H1: How To Dispose Of The Shot Hole Borer ## Main Content: Apply NowInsightHow To Dispose Of The Shot Hole BorerThousands of trees in Southern California are dying due to an invasive beetle known as the Shot Hole Borer. The non-native beetles bore into trees and introduce fungi that cause a disease called Fusarium dieback. The invasive beetles attack a wide variety of tree species including avocado, common landscape selections, and California native species in urban and wildland environments. When addressed quickly and properly the invasive insect can be stopped and dealt with.Symptoms:The Shot Hole Borers get their name from their ability to burrow into a tree and lay eggs; this leaves holes that look like gunshots. External symptoms include a sugary exudate, frass and entry, and exit holes. Internally, this fungal infection can interrupt the flow of water and nutrients to the tree’s branches.Solution:Cutting down diseased trees will not eliminate Fusarium dieback in an infected region. The Shot Hole Borer will continue to burrow into new trees, that’s why it’s crucial to take the proper precautions when disposing of infected materials. Proper Disposal Protocol:To get rid of as many beetles as possible, it’s recommended that all material is cut down to a diameter of one inch or less. Cover up the contaminated wood if it can’t be chipped immediately or transported correctly. Tightly wrap the logs in plastic to contain the beetles. Use sturdy plastic sheeting or tarp that can withstand rain and wind.Wood that can’t be ground up must be left to solarize. This method is suitable for handling both infested chips and logs. When done correctly, solar energy will heat plant material until both the beetle and fungi are killed. Solarization is most effective during the peak of summer when temperatures are higher and days are longer. Covering the chips/logs with sturdy plastic for at least 6 weeks is recommended during this time period. Keep log/chip layers as thin as possible (2 logs deep maximum) to ensure even heating throughout the pile.Don’t forget, it’s important to dispose of these materials properly. If you notice signs of a Shot-Hole Borer infestation, you should take immediate action to stop the spread. An important piece of our company’s mission involves responsible landscaping. Language: en Canonical URL: https://www.missionlandscape.com/post/how-to-get-rid-of-your-christmas-tree ## Headings Structure: H1: How To Get Rid Of Your Christmas Tree ## Main Content: Apply NowInsightHow To Get Rid Of Your Christmas TreeThe lights have dimmed on the holiday season, and now it’s time for the clean up to begin. In many suburban areas, Christmas trees are collected curbside during the first two weeks in January, and in most cases, the trees are chipped and made into a mulch. But there are other options to properly get rid of your tree.First, make sure to remove all lights, wire, tinsel, ornaments, nails and stands. Remember, live trees usually can’t be thrown into general trash bins, and Christmas tree trash pickup services vary depending on where you live. If you choose to dispose of your tree yourself, consider these options:Find a mulch facility. This process grinds old trees into other useful materials that can be used to line planters and local parks.Turn it into compost. If you choose this route, make sure to remove as many needles as possible because they take a long time to break down. The branches from your tree are an ideal base layer for compost piles. They allow airflow at the bottom of the pile as they decompose slowly over time. Once you have your branches in place, add your food scraps and other compostable items.Turn your tree into a craft project. Using your tree’s branches and spare wood pieces, try making holiday ornaments for next Christmas. Get the kids involved and create meaningful gifts for your family. It’s a great way to get a jump start on next year’s holiday list.Donate your tree. Check with your local zoo or nearby farms; some of the animals will use trees for a variety of different purposes within their habitats. Here are a few things you should avoid when disposing of your tree:Don’t burn it. While it’s great fuel for a fire, it’s highly recommended that you don’t use it in an indoor setting. In highly populated areas that are prone to bushfires like Southern California, burning your tree outdoors could be dangerous and potentially lead to a wildfire.Don’t stuff your tree in a dumpster or a trash can; most waste services will not pick them up if you don’t follow their procedures. At Mission Landscape, we are the experts in commercial landscape maintenance, tree care, water management, mulch and green waste recycling, landscape architecture, and landscape construction. The winds are a product of high pressure moving over the dry desert region. The Santa Ana winds most commonly occur during the cooler months, and they generally feel hot or warm. They also come with the threat of property damage and wildfire risk, and that’s why it’s crucial to prepare your property for this seasonal event.Fire SeasonsCalifornia has two fire seasons; the first occurs during the summer when the heat and dry conditions suck the moisture out of the landscape and create prime tinder. The second happens in the fall months when the Santa Ana winds make their appearance. These winds are particularly dangerous because the vegetation has already been dried out by the summer heat. The smallest spark can quickly spread thanks to the fast-moving winds.Preparation ImportanceIt’s always wise to prepare your landscape for the threats that come with the Santa Ana winds. As a property owner, checking your land for potential risks and giving your landscape a thorough assessment can make a big difference during fire season.Foliage AssessmentDead or diseased trees are an immediate risk and should be removed. Routine maintenance like pruning and removing branches located too close to structures and driveways can also be a great way to prep your property. As the winds howl, branches that haven’t been pruned have a greater risk of breaking or falling, creating dangerous conditions for people living in the area.Bushes should also be trimmed regularly to eliminate the possibility of uprooted plants and broken branches. By getting rid of loose debris, you’re ensuring a lack of dry material that could be kicked up by the wind and ultimately used as fuel during a wildfire.Do you need help maintaining your property for the threats that come with the Santa Ana Winds? As we approach National Poinsettia Day on December 12, we’re reminded of how this beautiful flower has become an integral part of making sunny Southern California feel festive this time of year. Here are some fun and useful facts about one of our favorite seasonal plants. Originating from Mexico, the poinsettia is the best-selling potted plant in both the United States and Canada. While red is the most popular color, you may be surprised to learn there are at least 100 varieties of poinsettias including white, pink, burgundy, yellow, apricot, marbled, and speckled. When picking your perfect poinsettia, there are a few things you should keep in mind. Don’t pick plants with fallen or yellowed leaves. Try to find a plant that’s full and balanced and has not been crowded in a display. It’s also important to check their stems and make sure they’re not drooping or wilting. Be sure to also look out for insect damage, as this can be detrimental to the lifespan of the flower.Once you’ve selected your poinsettia, try to keep your plant in an environment that’s around 55 to 70 degrees and gets plenty of sunlight. Poinsettias are drought-tolerant and easy to care for, however, they do prefer moist soil. With good care, a healthy plant should last around six to eight weeks.Did you know, contrary to popular opinion, poinsettias are actually not poisonous? It is however a good idea to keep them away from pets because they can still cause stomach upset and vomiting. At Mission Landscape, we are the experts in commercial landscape maintenance, tree care, water management, mulch and green waste recycling, landscape architecture, and landscape construction. As a teen, David started his journey inside Mission Landscape’s warehouse as a gopher. “I was fixing things, running trucks around – anything to help keep everyone moving,” said David. After graduation, David was moved into the field; he’ll never forget his first day. “I remember telling my first foreman Javier, I’m going out with you today. He just said to me, get in the back of the truck.” Over the years, David learned a number of invaluable skills and lessons from his co-workers. “I learned Spanish from the guys, maintenance techniques, and they taught me the importance of using the right tools to do the job.”David continued to work his way through the company until his father decided it was time to step away. During that period, technology was rapidly changing the landscaping business. “When my father decided to retire, I bought the company because I truly loved it.” Despite an evolution in the tools they used to do the work, David promised not to change the way they treated their clients or their employees. “Our business has grown organically, and that says a lot.”Today, Mission Landscape has grown from a single employee driving one truck, to 520 employees working with a fleet of 200 trucks. “When you think back on that, it keeps you grounded. You know the work it takes because you’ve been there, and that keeps you connected to the people in the field.” While the company’s growth over the last five decades is impressive, to David’s father it’s Mission Landscape’s reputation that makes him most proud. “Values are made at the dinner table, and we’ve kept his same set of values over the years,” said David. If you’re interested in joining our team, fill out an application form here.At Mission Landscape, we are the experts in commercial landscape maintenance, tree care, water management, mulch and green waste recycling, landscape architecture, and landscape construction. Within hours, the fast-moving wildfire had exploded to more than 7,000 acres and forced 90,000 people to evacuate. Our Mission Landscape Maintenance crews were already hard at work in some of those communities and were part of that evacuation order. Despite leaving the area for safety reasons, their work didn’t stop. Thanks to smart controller technology, our Mission Landscape Irrigation team was able to remotely turn on sprinkler systems in the area. The Silverado Fire was fueled by high winds, which are known for carrying embers to surrounding areas and creating the potential to spark additional flames on nearby homes and landscapes.“Our goal was to saturate as much of the property as possible to reduce the possibility of embers causing damage to plant material and homes,” said Mission Landscape Director of Irrigation, Rick Phenicie. “I’m not sure if we helped but if we did in the slightest, it makes me feel good.”After the fire broke out, Rick spent three days turning on irrigation systems in an effort to help water down plant materials in the area. Additionally, another property located further from the fire also benefited from this remote feature. The HOA board president asked Mission Landscape to turn on irrigation systems in their community as well. “While we’re not sure just how much our efforts helped, we’re happy that we could contribute to the safety and peace of mind of our clients,” said Rick.At Mission Landscape, we are the experts in commercial landscape maintenance, tree care, water management, mulch and green waste recycling, landscape architecture, and landscape construction. Language: en Canonical URL: https://www.missionlandscape.com/post/mulch-for-the-summer ## Headings Structure: H1: Mulch for the Summer ## Main Content: Apply NowInsightMulch for the SummerIt’s getting hot! When the weather is warm it’s important to stay hydrated. To keep our bodies from exhaustion, water is essential. It keeps us cool and healthy. Just like our bodies, plants demand the same type of nourishment and require more water in the heat, some more than others. But rather than going into a cooler and grabbing water, plants sip on moisture from their surrounding soil. To combat a plant’s thirst, Mission Landscape uses mulch to supply moisture all day.Mulch is one of our favorite materials to work with. We’ve stated before that mulch has benefits in weed suppression, erosion control, and aesthetic appeal; however, in the summer mulch works magic on your water bill. Made of recycled plant material, mulch is a natural resource that offers excellent protection for your landscape.Mulch is an outstanding way to get the most out of your irrigation system. Due to its makeup, Mulch is capable of saving water in 2 different ways. As a top cover, it blocks the heat from reaching the soil where the roots are. Without mulch, the sun has the ability to dry up the soil and wreak havoc on the roots, causing plants to fail. Just like a shield mulch acts as the protective barrier against that harsh Southern California heat. The second way mulch helps out is the way it acts like a sponge. When your irrigation system runs, the water penetrates the mulch. Instead of typical runoff, Mulch soaks up any excess water and distributes the moisture throughout the day. When paired with an efficient irrigation system, mulch can allow a good system to be great. The Summer months put a lot of stress on plants so why not protect your investment? Irrigation systems are running the most during the summer, so it’s important to get the most out of every drop. The water bill isn’t going anywhere, but there are steps to lowering it.At Mission Landscape, we are the experts in commercial landscape maintenance, tree care, water management, mulch and green waste recycling, landscape architecture, and landscape construction. Language: en Canonical URL: https://www.missionlandscape.com/post/picking-and-maintaining-your-christmas-tree ## Headings Structure: H1: Picking And Maintaining Your Christmas Tree ## Main Content: Apply NowInsightPicking And Maintaining Your Christmas Tree The annual holiday debate of real versus fake may never be solved. Although “team fake tree” has fewer worries when it comes to making sure their holiday displays look their best for the entire Christmas season, “team real tree” gets to enjoy the added benefits of that unmistakable pine smell. With that wonderful seasonal scent, however, comes the added responsibility of maintaining the health of your tree. But if the thought of a little extra work doesn’t deter you, here are few helpful pointers.Picking The Perfect TreeIf possible, buy a freshly-cut tree at a farm or shop at a lot that sells products from local farmers. Most Christmas trees are cut about three to four weeks before they arrive, so it’s important to do a thorough check of their branches and needles. Grab a branch between your thumb and forefinger and gently clampdown. Then, pull the tree towards yourself. If you end up with a handful of needles, the tree is already past its prime. You should also shake the tree. If the exterior needles fall off, it’s time to look for another one.Preparing Your TreeBefore you bring the tree home, make sure you re-cut the trunk at least one inch from the bottom. It’s crucial to do this before putting it in the stand; making a fresh cut re-opens the tree stem so it can drink water. The stand you choose should hold at least one gallon. Feeding Your TreeFeeding your tree plain tap water is the best way to keep it hydrated. The actual amount a tree consumes varies, so be vigilant in the first few days and make sure to refill it when the stand gets low. It’s not unusual for a tree to drink two gallons of water on the first day. Do not allow the water level to drop below the fresh cut, or the stem could reseal, and the tree will be unable to drink. Maintaining Your TreeFinally, make sure your tree is in a location away from heat sources like space heaters, fireplaces or televisions. The heat can speed up the moisture loss of your Christmas tree and cause it to die faster. Did you know, 25 to 30 million live trees are harvested annually in farms across the United States? At Mission Landscape, we are the experts in commercial landscape maintenance, tree care, water management, mulch and green waste recycling, landscape architecture, and landscape construction. Save money and protect your property with expert tips from Mission Landscape. Language: en Canonical URL: https://www.missionlandscape.com/post/summer-irrigation-tips ## Headings Structure: H1: Summer Irrigation Tips ## Main Content: Apply NowInsightSummer Irrigation TipsMay is here and that means summer is just around the corner. For us Californians, we know that the heat is on its way if it is not already here. For landscapers, property managers, and homeowners alike, we can expect the water bill to start to increase as the summer heat can put a lot of strain on plants. While the irrigation system works harder, know that the investment you put into summer care can help plants thrive in the long run. While it is important to keep your plants hydrated on your property throughout the summer, do not fear. Irrigation experts at Mission Landscape have some water-wise tips to help you mind that bill. One of the number one factors to a large water bill is the plants used on a property. By renovating your landscape with more environmentally conscious plants you can reduce water consumption drastically. That typical lush grass is one of the most water craving plants around. Instead, try opting for fescue or ornamental grasses in its place. You can save money on your bill and reduce the amount of mowing and care needed to maintain grass. Options like this while still making your landscape stand out and save you money in the long run.Another large factor in water consumption is the actual irrigation system used. Gone are the days of manual water systems. Today commercial irrigators are making the switch to Smart Controllers. Smart Controllers, when utilized properly, use data from local water districts to measure how much water your landscape needs. While the summer heat can scorch plants, you can relax knowing your irrigation system knows how much to water. With daily updates, your irrigation system will even know if it rained in the past 24 hours. This could prevent over-watering and reduce unnecessary run times.Within our irrigation systems, we can always find efficiencies. Knowing how well your system is working is as important as knowing much water your plants need. Doing routine checks for leaks and damages is crucial to saving your water bill. Nothing is worse than literal money going down the drain. Proper spray patterns should also be taken into effect. These can ensure that water is being allocated throughout the property correctly instead of in just one area, which can make a huge difference on your water bill at the end of the month. With a plan and an efficient system, irrigation nightmares can be solved. On much larger projects Mission has seen some astronomical savings. Language: en Canonical URL: https://www.missionlandscape.com/post/the-benefits-of-mulch ## Headings Structure: H1: The Benefits of Mulch ## Main Content: Apply NowInsightThe Benefits of MulchHeading into the warmer months, there a few items to put on the landscape checklist. Adding some mulch to your landscape is an easy way to give it a beautiful, finished appearance. While it’s sure to make your colorful flowers stand out, it’s also a great way to help protect them. Here are a few benefits of mulching.Mulch Can Save Water And MoneyWe all like to save money, right? Well, mulch can help you do that. The layer of compost can be used to cover up soil and helps lock in the moisture. During hot months, we tend to use a lot of water that can be lost through evaporation. Having a top layer of mulch can help keep that soil moist while creating an environment where plants can survive and thrive. Thus, saving you water and money.Mulch Suppresses WeedsFor some of the same reasons mulch saves water, mulch can also suppress those pesky weeds. As many of us know, photosynthesis is a process where sunlight helps plant life grow. Having a layer of topper mulch can block that vital light, preventing weeds from reaching the surface. Mulch Improves LooksWhile weeds can ruin the aesthetics of a planter, mulch can do the opposite. Having a nice dark layer of topper mulch to contrast against the bright flora can be a quick and cost-effective way to increase the value of an old or boring planter. The addition of mulch is a fast and relatively cheap way to increase the looks of a landscape without the hassle of going through a complete redesign of a property.Helps Fight ErosionBy adding a top layer of mulch to your soil you can prevent 2 different types of erosion. When you lay down mulch you can protect your soil from an excess of water. Mulch has the ability to be very absorbent, helping essential soil and nutrients stay put. Not only does mulch help fight against water erosion, but it also protects against wind, as well. Because mulch is heavier than soil, it’s able to keep soil stay in place during large gusts of wind. Language: en Canonical URL: https://www.missionlandscape.com/post/the-perfect-time-to-reinvest-irrigation ## Headings Structure: H1: The Perfect Time to Reinvest: Irrigation ## Main Content: Apply NowInsightThe Perfect Time to Reinvest: IrrigationIn California, we are accustomed to a fairly consistent climate. However, residents in California know that the summer can reach triple digits. Heat and a lack of moisture can be detrimental to a plant’s survival, so finding time to make sure your landscape can survive a harsh summer is crucial to maintaining a beautiful community all year long. When is the best time to reinvest:During the winter, we typically see more moisture and like to take advantage of the “wet season”. In order to do repairs and upgrades, irrigation systems may be turned off. With temperatures cooler and more rainfall, winter is an ideal time to reinvest in or enhance your property. If you delay changes to the summer, you run the risk of harming plants. What areas to reinvest in:Making drastic changes in the summer can be dangerous if you do not act quickly. Taking time in winter to inspect your irrigation is key. This includes checking for leaks and installing smart controllers. These types of upgrades work great for saving you money on your water bill throughout the whole year. Smart controllers allow you to maximize efficiencies throughout your property after their installation. Another tip is adjusting your coverage patterns. Coverage patterns are the area your irrigation reaches By adjusting the coverage patterns on your property you can allocate the proper amount of water to each area and reduce the amount of waste. Testing each area to make sure your sprinklers are hitting their desired areas and pressure adjustment can also make big difference. One or more of these upgrades could lead to drastic savings for you down the road.At Mission Landscape, we are the experts in commercial landscape maintenance, tree care, water management, mulch and green waste recycling, landscape architecture, and landscape construction. Due to increased demand for fuel modification for the communities we serve, Mission Landscape has been looking for the right tool to speed up a very tedious task.Fuel modification is the removal of vegetation that is more likely to increase wildfire risk and in efforts to reduce that risk and endangerment to surrounding homes, guidelines have been put in place by local fire authorities. By removing potential fire risks, we can create defensible spaces to be replaced by more suitable vegetation. This can be a time-consuming, yet necessary process. However, with the correct tools, there are ways to speed up the process.Typically brush is cut back from homes using chainsaws and hand cutters. While effective, this process costs time and manpower to complete large work areas that can cover acres of land. Also, this process puts some workers at risk depending on the location of the vegetation removal.Technology has come a long way in the Landscaping industry, allowing the process of fuel modification to run quicker and more efficiently. The Remote Control Land Clearing machine is one tool in our arsenal to meet the needs of a growing service. The machine is capable of removing as much brush as a complete crew in a fraction of the time. Now, one crew member can safely guide the machine up slopes up to angles of 45 degrees with the push of a button, allowing Mission to save in time and money all while keeping our staff safer. The right tools like the Land Clearing machine can help keep Mission Landscape’s job sites and clients stay safe from various problems. Language: en Canonical URL: https://www.missionlandscape.com/post/upgrading-to-smart-controllers ## Headings Structure: H1: Upgrading to Smart Controllers ## Main Content: Apply NowInsightUpgrading to Smart ControllersSouthern California’s warm summers make it tough for plants to thrive. Luckily irrigation systems are becoming advanced enough to help out our precious landscapes. While most of us are familiar with traditional sprinkler heads; Smart controllers are the brains behind the scenes that are hidden. A controller is a system that each head is wired to telling it when to spray and not to spray. Over time these systems have gotten more intelligent and important to the way commercial landscape is operated.‍Before the invention of smart controllers, traditional systems were used on most property types. In this specific system, the heads are set on a scheduled pattern that starts the system at the same time consistently. These systems are still used typically on single residential homes, and due to efficiency, large properties have moved away from traditional systems to save time and save energy. Traditional systems are not water conscious and don’t precisely measure how much each plant needs.‍Like most things today, irrigation is online. While traditional controllers have set timers, Smart controllers check the weather and adapt. The advancements in smart Controllers offer many benefits compared to traditional controllers. Adding an efficient system to your landscape can help your landscape grow and protect your investment. Because the Smart Controllers are hooked up to the internet, they are able to update in real-time. Based on what the water district reports your plants are going to get the right amount of water. Also, with temperature and rainfall taken into account, Smart Controllers are able to properly disperse the right amount of water to prevent over or under-watering your landscape. Processes like these help save more money and have been shown to save up to 20 percent more water throughout entire properties. Another plus, Controllers like these reward owners with thousands of dollars in savings and rebates.‍In addition to saving water, the remote control access allows much more of the work to be done off-site. While boots on the ground will still be used to inspect and make fine adjustments, a lot of work can be done remotely. Being able to monitor and control water from afar is a huge benefit that allows irrigation teams to spot leaks, turn on and off heads at will and potentially help communities. For instance, during the 2020 Silverado fire, Mission Landscape’s Irrigation team was able to turn on sprinkler heads to neighboring “at-risk” areas. During a mandatory evacuation, Mission Landscape was able to access the irrigation system remotely and water down the plants surrounding high-risk homes in the community, without inundating the area with more bodies and trucks, leaving the area clear for fire personnel to do their job.Technology has come a long way for Irrigation, making it easy for all communities to save time and money. Expert tips on mowing, dethatching, aeration, and seeding for a lush winter turf. Language: en Canonical URL: https://www.missionlandscape.com/post/when-to-overseed-your-lawn ## Headings Structure: H1: When To Overseed Your Lawn ## Main Content: Apply NowInsightWhen To Overseed Your LawnDespite the heat, fall has arrived in sunny Southern California. This time of year we often think about pumpkins, falling leaves and the possibility of cooler temperatures, but it’s also a great time to start thinking about overseeding our lawns and turf areas. Why Fall Is A Good Time To OverseedFall is the perfect time to begin overseeding in the Golden State because the soil is still warm and the air is becoming cooler. By overseeding during this time of year, you’re allowing cool season turf that’s more suitable for the winter climate to flourish while the summer grass goes dormant. Why Overseeding Is BeneficialOver time, grass can get worn out and eventually needs to be filled or replaced or some warm season grasses can get thatch or spongy and in the fall is a good time to scalp to remove that build-up; that’s where the process of overseeding comes into play. This practice is an easy and cost-effective way to bring that lush green look back to your turf areas without tearing everything out and starting over. How To OverseedMow low: While this may be a rough look at first, it’s a crucial step in making your turf look revived. Cutting your grass shorter than normal will allow the new seed to properly germinate. Be sure to bag up the clippings otherwise, they could block the new seeds from going into the soil.Dethatching: Thatch is a mixture of living and dead plant material that forms at the base of grass plants. This layer of stems, leaves, and roots can block nutrients, air, and water from reaching the soil if it’s too thick. Make sure to measure your thatch; if it’s well over half-an-inch, it should be removed. You can rake it yourself, or use a power rake to remove it. Thinning out that layer will help improve the health of your grass.Aeration: This process penetrates the soil, giving it the opportunity to breathe. It also allows nutrients and water to seep deeper into the ground. Aeration isn’t always necessary, it just depends on the health of your soil.Adding seed: After you’re finished preparing your lawn, it’s time to seed. You’ll want to start applying the seed over the top of your current turf. Make sure you’re applying an equal spread of seeds to ensure your turf grows back even.Remember, overseeding is all about proper timing. If you choose to overseed during the wrong season, you’ll end up wasting your time, money and will most likely be disappointed with the results.Do you need help preparing your turf for winter?
